Dan's Tech Tips:
Volume Control
The volume in Access Programs is set through the Windows Volume control.
Having an Icon on the desktop with a shortcut key is helpful for a screenreader access user to adjust the volume and unmute the volume when someone has quieted speech by muting the volume.
Finding Volume Control
The volume control is located in different places depending on the operating system and the view. In Windows XP Pro with a classic view, Volume control is found in the Program list under Accessories and Entertainment.
You can reach the volume control by:
1. Press Windows key.
2. Press the letter P for Programs.
If you have a programs update in your start menu, you may need to press the letter p again and then enter.
If you only have one icon starting with p in your start menu, pressing p will automatically expand the programs menu. I hope that wasn't too confusing.
3. Type the letter a for Accessories..
4. Type the letter E for Entertainment.
5. If you type the letter v, volume control will open.
If you wish to put a volume control icon on the desktop, do the following.
a. Arrow down to the volume control icon in the entertainment menu as mentioned above.
b. Press the application key next to the right control key.
c. Press the letter n for send to.
d. Press the letter d twice to reach desktop and then hit enter.
e. Press windows key plus the letter m and move to the desktop.
f. Press the letter v until reaching "volume control."
g. Press the application key next to the right control key.
h. Press the letter r for properties.
i. Tab twice and type the letter v followed by hitting enter.
You now have a volume control shortcut of alt plus control plus v.
6. If your volume gets muted, do the following:
a. Press alt plus control plus the letter v.
b. Tab twice and press the space bar to uncheck the mute button.
c. Press alt plus f4 to close volume control.
