An Overview of an Accessible Leopard by Jim Denham

The latest version of the Macintosh operating system, OS X 10.5, includes some incredible accessibility features. For users who are blind, the built-in VoiceOver screen review software offers a whole new way to use the Mac. This powerful tool offers features such as refreshable Braille support, an extensive help system and reliable access to many popular Macintosh applications.

For the past several years, all Macintosh computers have shipped with an Intel based processor. This hardware platform allows the machine to run non-Apple operating systems, including Microsoft Windows. Apple even provides a utility, called Bootcamp, that allows the user to easily switch between operating systems. This dual operating system environment is a great solution for individuals who want to use both Mac and Windows on the same machine.

The Tek Talk session to be held on 13 April will introduce users to the powerful screen review software included with all versions of Macintosh Leopard. The powerful Navigation and help features of VoiceOver and the Mac will be demonstrated. The session will also include information for sighted trainers who need to provide instruction to persons who are blind on the Mac. Finally, the ability to easily and efficiently switch between the Mac and Windows operating systems will be shown.
