On Tuesday, October 11th at 3 p.m.. EDT (Noon PDT, 1 p.m.MDT , and 2 p.m. CDT) the Lebanon County Library System, based in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in partnership with Helping Hands for the Blind held a book discussion of The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It is the 2011 One Book, One Community selection for six counties in Pennsylvania. While the One Book program focuses on activities in these Counties, the Lebanon County Library System wished to open up a world of possibilities for anyone having difficulty in reaching the Library to take part in a discussion group.
The book’s story revolves around the relations between a group of white Southern women and their black maids in 1962.. Exposing the tender care and concern of these women for the families who employ them, and the terrible unfairness and cruelty of their position in a prejudiced society. The relationships are poignant and caught up in the very real history of the Civil Rights movement.
Readers may personally attend sessions at the Lebanon or Richland Libraries to participate in the online discussions or simply tune in via the internet by going to the Accessible World website, a division of Helping Hands for the Blind.. http://accessibleworld.org/
Once on the Accessible World website, click on the Book Nook links on the left side. Those using a personal computer may be asked to install a small piece of software or they may use the links to access this completely via the web and no installation is necessary. Those with a microphone will be able to vocally ask questions or comments can be entered by typing a message which will appear to the group.
We will start the discussion by focusing on the audio book and the movie as this session was designed for the vision impaired community but is certainly not restricted to such participation. Our goal is to help everyone interested to meet and discuss this title without the limitations of travel or transportation. Susquehanna Association of the Blind and Vision Impaired has assisted us in distributing audio copies of this title as have local Lions Clubs within Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. We look forward to a discussion reaching all types of readers across the globe and hope this will make the event more exciting.
The discussion will be led by Barbara Neil and other staff members of the Lebanon County Library System, Annville Free Library and Richland Community Library. For more information, please contact Barbara directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration is not required but an email to let us know that you intend to join us, would be appreciated.
