We are going to start this year’s “Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind” with an interesting discussion. How often have you gone to a function where a majority of those in attendance were totally blind, and where food/ h'orderves are being served? Is it important to have a couple of sighted folks assist with putting food on plates or napkins? If sighted attendees do assist, are we, as totally blind persons, taking advantage of their vision or just being practical? What if you have a guide dog; would that make a difference? What if you’ve never been in that person’s home; does that create a different situation? Should the host or hostess, if totally blind, make arrangements ahead of time to ask sighted persons attending to assist in these matters, or do you just let the chips fall where they may? Do we just assume that there will be someone to help us, or do we bring this subject up when we are invited to a gathering with mostly totally blind persons?
I believe that many of us have found ourselves in this type of situation which, at times, seems to have some difficult ramifications. Join us as we discuss this very personal issue this Sunday evening from 6-7 p.m. on accessibleworld.org in the Accessible Classroom and share your experiences with us. If you are a partial, we’d appreciate your viewpoint into this very sensitive situation. Do you, as partials, feel that you are being taken advantage of, or is it just something you do automatically.
I really do hope that a number of you will participate in this program so that we can better understand our roles. If you’d like to share any thoughts ahead of time, please email them to me at kenmetz1946@gmail.com
