DEALING WITH AIRPORT TRAVEL ON ISSUES FACING PERSONS WHO ARE BLIND

How difficult or inconvenient is it for a person who is blind or visually impaired to travel? What challenges are involved in their travel? What happens if you travel with a white cane? What happens if you travel with a guide dog? How do airline and airport persons treat you when you travel? How do hotel or motel personnel treat you when you make your reservations and when you walk into that establishment?

Do some of you hold back from traveling because of a lack of training given people in the travel industry on how to treat someone who is blind? Do you get tired of constantly having to be an advocate on a vacation when all you’re doing is looking for some leisure?

Are these matters only difficult when you travel distances, or do they also occur when traveling locally?

These questions and many more issues of travel pertaining to blindness will be answered on “Issues Pertaining to Blindness” when our program occurs on accessibleworld.org with our special guest, Mr. Ron Brooks.

Ron is the President of ACB’s Arizona state affiliate and a long-time member of ACB. In his work life, he is a Business Development Manager for an international company which provides public transit, paratransit and other transportation services, and in that capacity, he travels extensively within North America as well as occasional trips to Europe. Ron can use a cane, but he completes most of his travel with his Seeing Eye Dog Potter. Ron will discuss everything from making travel plans, to requesting accommodations to the extra preparations one needs to make when traveling with a service animal.

You are guaranteed to get an ear full of great stories, truths, stereotypes and advice when traveling. Of course, we will also be certain to have plenty of time for your questions.
