history student Edwin Cooney will examine the major decisions made by Abraham Lincoln our 16th president.
Using the Civil War as the background, rather than the theme of his presentation, Edwin Cooney will explore the forces that President Lincoln faced during the decision making process. The three major decisions to be discussed will be: (1.) How the president managed the beginning of the war; (2.) How the purpose of the conflict shifted from being about preserving the union to freeing the slaves; and (3.) How President Lincoln used the constitutional authority to suspend civil liberties during the Civil War.
Although Mr. Cooney deeply believes that Abraham Lincoln was probably the wisest man ever to occupy the presidency, he believes that Mr. Lincoln made at least one major miscalculation that made the war inevitable.
