Our book for May Third is “Coal: A human History”, DB 58009 and we have an interview with the Author.
Coal, according to Author, Barbra Freese, was the mainspring that thrust the mercantile and agrarian worlds of England and America into the age of steel, steam, railroads and world power. Coal led to Capitalism, Cartels, Communism and Labor UNIONS. Unlike other fuels such as oil, it’s supply seems almost endless. However, unlike oil, coal has always been associated with poverty, disease and social disruption. While Coal may have been indispensible for the development of modern industry, and many of its deadly side effects have been overcome, It’s continued use may endanger the whole planet through global
warming.
The Author, Barbara Reese, is the former Assistant Attorney General of Minnesota who took on and raised the ire of the powerful coal industry by trying to enforce EPA regulations. She is now with the Society of Concerned Scientists.
